The story of a robes attorney
In 1791, while a French judge was sitting on the balcony of his house, he saw a quarrel between two people, which ended in the killing of one of the other, and the killer fled.
A bystander extended a helping hand to the dead man, wishing to save him, while he was next to him, so the police arrested him, and he was presented to the court accused of the felony murder.
Although the judge witnessed the incident from his balcony, the case was presented to him for consideration and determination, and he knew the innocence of the accused. And since French law only recognizes evidence and evidence, and follows the rule that "it is not permissible to rule with personal knowledge," he was forced to sentence the innocent accused to death.
The judge did not forgive himself the verdict he had issued, and he kept blaming himself, and the torment of conscience haunted him, which made him admit to the public opinion his error in the judgment issued by an innocent person to death.
The French public opinion did not accept the judge’s admission easily, but revolted against him and accused him of having neither conscience nor honesty, and the judge accepted these accusations as a punishment he deserves, until one day - and one of the cases was examined in court - that the lawyer who defended the accused in the case under consideration witnessed In front of him, dressed in a black robe, which is not usual.
The judge asked him: Why are you wearing this black robe?
He said to him: To remind you of the unjust death sentence that you sentenced me to an innocent!
Since that incident, the black robe has become the lawyer’s uniform in courtrooms in France, and from there it has spread to other countries and its design differs from one state to another.
